High-Profile Golfing Horrors in 2017

It's that time of year again when stories of ghosts and ghouls and all things terrifying come to the fore.

Golf has had its fair share of spooked golfers and strange goings-on in 2017, so we thought we would have a look at some of the most high-profile golfing horrors over the past year.

Let's see what we've come up with.

DJ final round collapse at WGC-HSBC

Arguably, the most memorable horror show in golf is likely to be the most recent. Just this weekend we watched with amazement as Justin Rose managed to overturn an eight-shot deficit to claim the WGC-HSBC with more than a little help from world number one Dustin Johnson.

Entering the final round at Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai at the WGC-HSBC Championship firmly in the driving seat, few would have predicted such a shocking collapse.

Dramatic scenes in golf are plentiful but the fact that the last time the world's best player gave away a six-shot lead was in 1996 - when Greg Norman crumbled at the Masters to hand Nick Faldo his third Green Jacket - helps explain the astonishing nature of events in Shanghai.

Spieth's nine at The Masters 2017

With memories of a 2016 Masters collapse fresh in his mind, Jordan Spieth will have been keen to ensure he banished the demons from what would have been a thoroughly scarring experience.

Probably wasn't in the script then that on the par-5 15th hole at Augusta National the three-time major winner would card a quadruple-bogey nine and rekindle questions about his ability to deal with the events of 12 months previous.

Here's a reminder of his interview after the 2016 collapse. It's a hard watch.

Day quadruple-bogey at PGA Championship

At times ill fortune may befall us as if by fate. In other situations, ghastly outcomes may be our deserved comeuppance for the poor decisions we make. Step forward, Jason Day.

During this year's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina, the 2015 champion nosedived on the leaderboard after playing a shot that left many commentators perplexed.

In the cauldron that is the major championship arena, Day had managed to get himself firmly in contention with birdies in the three preceding holes before enduring an implosion when closing out his round on the 18th.

Justin Thomas cards a quintuple-bogey nine

Back before Justin Thomas had managed to capture a maiden major at the 2017 PGA Championship he endured a somewhat more humbling experience upon the fairways of Royal Birkdale - or, more accurately, when buried deep in its marram grass.

Having already recorded a three-over-par start through the first three holes of his second round, Thomas endured a card-wrecking nine on the par-4 sixth. A horrific lie and a few miscalculated swings saw the Kentuckian reach the green in seven shots before two-putting to end what can only be described as a thoroughly nightmarish experience.

J.B. Holmes Collapse at The Players

Heading into the final round of this year's Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass J.B. Holmes found himself in tied first position and well in contention for a first win since the Shell Houston Open in 2015.

Struggling throughout his final round Holmes was quickly out of the running, but the final nail in the coffin came at the course's iconic 17th island hole. Two balls in the water and a quintuple-bogey later and he was begging for this ghastly affair - which culminated in a 12-over-par 84 - to end.
