This week has been all about the return of golf's somewhat fallen titan. When he stepped onto the tee yesterday you could practically feel the golfing world collectively rejoicing.
Tiger finished 4+, 11 shots off the pace set by early leader Justin Rose. This was largely thanks to a round riddled with inconsistency off the tee; with him failing to find the fairway on more occasions than he succeeded.
However, were it not for some impressive scrambling it would have been much much worse. Awkward chips rolled close and nervy putts rattled the cup...oh Tiger, how we've missed you!
Here's what his opening round looked like:
Unfortunately, Torrey Pines is not the sort of golf course that coddles those wayward off the tee. It's rough, even that just a few meters off the fairway, is menacingly dense and a clean escape is near impossible...even for an 8-time champ!
But he's not done yet.
If he can get the ball working for him off the tee and keep up the short game standards he could yet make a charge. I think we're all hoping he will!
What do you think? Can he turn it around?
